FAQ

What is kickboxing?

  • Kickboxing is exactly what it sounds like: kicking and boxing! Kickboxing originated in Japan in the 1950s, with American kickboxing following in the 1970s. Kickboxing is different from traditional Western boxing due to the different opportunities and challenges presented by the use of kicks. Kickboxing is different from Muay Thai due to its lack of elbows, knees, and clinching.

What is Muay Thai?

  • Muay Thai is Thai-style kickboxing. Known as “the art of eight limbs”, Muay Thai utilizes punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes. Muay Thai is also set apart by its use of clinch and sweep techniques. Muay Thai dates back to mid-19th century Thailand. It was originally used as a combat art in wartime, and slowly evolved into the organized sport we see today. As a sport, it did not gain international recognition until the late 20th century.
