Why Muay Thai is a Good Sport for Kids

Muay Thai is about much more than learning how to kick and punch.

Our Muay Thai Juniors program helps children develop skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Our goal isn’t just to build better athletes--we’re helping build confident and disciplined young people who will succeed on and off the mats.

Here are 9 reasons why Muay Thai is a good sport for kids:

#1: Builds confidence and character

Confidence and character are built through time and repetition--otherwise known as practice. Muay Thai provides youth athletes with the opportunity to practice making character-driven choices with confidence and integrity. Practice is more than just getting reps of a technique; it's getting reps of "Yes, I can do this".

#2: Builds mental and emotional resilience

Muay Thai is a sport of constant learning. Failures and missteps are a part of the learning process. Youth athletes learn how to face their failures, deal with them, learn from them, and grow into stronger and more resilient people.

#3: Teaches discipline and self control

At its core, Muay Thai is about mastery of the self. It's not about power or dominance over others. Our youth athletes learn to make discipline and self-control a habit.

#4: Encourages Goal Setting

Our athletes are encouraged to challenge themselves to step up. They can set the goal, but then they have to put in the work to reach it. We celebrate their wins, however big or small, and keep working for the next one.

#5: Improves Fitness

Muay Thai is a fun, unique, and engaging way to get your body moving. It utilizes all muscle groups while also building cardiovascular endurance. As athletes get older, they can incorporate various strength training elements to further improve their health and fitness.

#6: Teaches Practical Self Defense

In addition to developing their physical fitness, youth athletes will also develop a practical skillset they can use to keep themselves safe should the need ever arise. It is self-defense, not self-offense; as such, we emphasize the importance of strong and effective defense to keep ourselves safe.

#7: Fosters a Culture of Respect

Muay Thai has deep cultural roots in respect: respect for the gym, your trainers, your teammates, and yourself. This idea has persisted throughout the evolution of Muay Thai, and is a cornerstone of our teaching philosophy.

#8: Provides Positive Social Interactions

Muay Thai is a team sport (check out our post here). Our youth athletes develop their teamwork and interpersonal skills in a positive, structured environment with their peers. We use a regular class structure with drills, partner exercises, and games to keep our athletes engaged, learning, and having fun!

#9: They Won't Outgrow It

People don’t age out of combat sports the way they might with other sports. This is an endeavor they can continue well into their adult life if they so choose. The things learned in Muay Thai will carry over into other parts of your life, both physically and mentally.
